Several years ago, we placed rubber mulch around our shrubbery. Today, it is as fresh as it was the first day we
set it out. We are pleased with the results we have seen. Rubber mulch does not fade easily like ordinary
organic mulches. Nor does it decompose easily like bark mulch or pine needles. It has remained bright brown in
appearance. When rains and winds come along, it has been heavy enough to stay in place instead of blowing about
the yard. It hasn’t washed away from the landscape beds, either. Moisture is allowed to penetrate its surface,
and bedding plants thrive with this ground cover.

Rubber mulch is an excellent product for playgrounds. Its rubbery texture makes it ideal for tumbles and falls
by small children. Rubber mulch meets safety standards when it is
only applied at a six inch depth rather than a nine inch depth, so less is necessary.
Before buying rubber mulch, measure the area you plan to mulch. Pay attention to the packaging to determine how
many packages to buy. Look at the color to see that you have bought the same kind. It may be hard to go back
later and match up what you have put down.

When mulching, there are factors to be considered. Landscapes work best when mulched later in spring rather than
earlier. That way, the ground has a chance to warm up. Seedlings have a chance to begin sprouting under the
warmer conditions. When seedlings are a few inches high, place thin
mulch around them. The idea is to protect them, not to squelch them. Make sure the area has been weeded well
before spreading mulch. A thicker layer in areas that do not have young seedlings will keep down the amount of
weeds. The idea is to squelch them! Do not place mulch too close to woody stems or trunks because it could cause
moisture. Mulch in any form can trap moisture, which invites
pests.
